Just returned from Jill's first visit to the eye doctor. At her three year check up with the pediatrician, she seemed to be guessing during the vision test, so just to be on the safe side (since we have eyesight issues on both sides of the family), we scheduled her an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist.
Turns out she has a pretty significant astigmatism (an eye disorder in which the cornea is abnormally curved, causing out-of-focus vision) and is farsighted (difficulty seeing objects that are nearby). Her left eye is worse than her right (spherical shows the degree of farsightedness and cylindrical shows the amount of astigmatism):
Right eye:
spherical: +2.50
cylindrical: -1.25
Left eye:
spherical: +3.75
cylindrical: -2.25
Left alone (if we hadn't caught it at such an early age, for example), her eye sight would continue to get worse and she could end up with something called a "stationary" lazy eye - where her brain would favor the right eye over the left and her left wouldn't develop properly.
So... it's off to get Jillian some new glasses! She says she wants "pink sparkly Dora ones."
