Yesterday I had a visit from an angel... and my hero as a mom. Sandy has overcome so much adversity in her life and still manages to face life with courage and strength and a smile. And Audrey has Cystic Fibrosis and underwent a double-lung transplant last year at the age when most girls are dreaming of school dances and their first kiss. This girl has seen more and gone through more than one person should ever have to deal with. Yet she had this air of knowing exactly who she is and being comfortable in her own skin.
I worked with Sandy when Mark and I were out in Amherst for a year while Mark got his Masters. I hadn't seen them since... geez, Audrey was 8 I think, and she's 14 years old now. I got the call last year when Audrey went in for the transplant, but I had lost touch with them personally. So when Sandy called earlier this week and said they'd be in the area for a Transplant Celebration in a nearby town and could she stop by? I was so excited! Sandy sent me the link to Audrey's Care Page and I swear I stayed up that night until 2:00 AM catching up on what's been going on since I left Amherst.
My kids looooved them both. The fact that Jillian hugged and kissed (GASP!) them both before they left is so telling. Matt woke up this morning and asked, "Where's Audrey? When is she coming back?"
They both are truly amazing people. I feel blessed to know them.
